Dr. Marcos Pires graduated from the University of Escola de Medicina e Cirurgia do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1974. Since then he has been working at the National Cancer Institute of Brazil (INCA) as a surgical oncologist. During this time he became member of the Brazilian Cancer Society (SBC), is co-founder of the Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology (SBCO), and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) among others.

As oncologist he learned about complex situations in several areas of cancer surgery, such as abdominal, thoracic, pelvic, breast and soft tissue segments, gathering along the way special skills to propose innovative surgical techniques and devices for cancer treatment.

Dr. Pires has always had a special interest in R&D, holding so far one issued U.S. patent and three others Brazilian patents related to medical devices; all of them went to the market successfully.

As author, Dr. Pires has written several paper works that are published in outstanding journals of medicine.

x At the INCA he followed a comprehensive and effective career, being active in many sectors of the Institution; he is Former-Chairman of the Medical and Surgical Division. Nowadays, and over the last 15 years, he is the surgeon-in-chief of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Center (CEMO/INCA) with special interest in R&D over long-term central venous systems for chemotherapy.
